A backlink is an inbound link pointing to your site from someone else's. Search engines treat them as endorsements, so links from relevant, trusted sites carry real ranking weight. Quality beats quantity by a wide margin: a handful of links from respected, on-topic sites outperforms hundreds of low-value ones, and spammy links can actively hurt.
